NZ Bus Head Office & Operations Centre

With the added complexity of a pandemic and numerous lockdowns, we undertook the project of NZ Bus moving its Head Office and Operations Centre to new premises in Halsey St, in the heart of the Wynyard Qtr technology and innovation hub.

A fresh and modern design approach under the umbrella design idea of “Urban Simplicity” was needed, one that reflected the distinct activities and diversity of each business unit, along with the needs of transporting people in a unique urban environment.

Our aim was to create a new NZ Bus workplace, comprising these two distinct activities, that together achieved the same goals, outcomes, and response to the city and urban environments they operate and work in.

Each environment is unique but designed with shared common elements ensuring there is a connection between the two spaces, delivering on the mandate of a “one team” approach.

A palette of materials signifying a welcoming and comfortable approach was used, including timber, industrial, mesh, terrazzo, and polished concrete, with green tones used in paint, carpet, and tiles, accompanied by eclectic furniture and styling, including an abstract mural of Auckland City.

Ultimately, we have created two agile spaces, linked by their ‘look and feel’, with the ability to adapt and flex over time to meet the requirements of the occupants and as workflow needs change, which is a reflection of the fluidity of public transport and NZ Bus’ vision for the future.
